I''ll be honest: I didn''t like these headphones at first. They''re very different from others I''ve heard, and I''ve listened to Sennheiser HD 650s, Oppo PM-3s, Hifiman HE-400S, and MrSpeakers Aeons, just to name a few. What sets these apart is not just the sound, but also the design, the fit, and build quality.

Soundwise, these headphones are incredibly detailed. If they have any emphasis, it seems to be the upper mids and parts of the treble (you WILL hear echoes in your recordings that you never knew existed!), but that seems to give a pleasant clarity to the sound. Since these headphones bring the details to the forefront, you don''t have to crank them up very loud to hear all the details: they''re best at mid-volume, at least to my ears.

Meanwhile, the bass dial lets you add or subtract a bit of rumble and warmth at will, which I find very convenient, especially when compensating for outside noise on the go. Instead of turning up the volume like I would on other phones, I just give the dial a twist. Finally, these headphones have an amazing ability to resolve details: no matter how many tiny things are going on at once in the music, you can hear each part distinctly. I''ve only noticed this kind of resolution in other Sennheiser headphones. Overall, the sound is slightly on the thin/cool side, but it seems balanced enough to serve most genres very well.

The headphones are a bit large, so I sometimes feel a bit silly taking them out and about, but it''s nice to have the option, and I would have no problem taking these on a bus or airplane. That said, they fit comfortably, and I like the asymmetrical design choices as well.

Highly recommended; just don''t judge them too quickly; listen to them exclusively for a week or two, then go back to whatever you were listening to before and realize just how much of the music you''ve been missing!

Cons:
-The mids are loud, shrill, lacking depth, thin, and somehow on top of this... recessed. Instead of hearing strong and balanced vocals, you hear vocals that lack body while also piercing your ears which in turn gives you a headache.
-When the bass dial is turned up, the bass loses its tightness and control. It becomes boomy as if you were at the club.
-This headphone is very fatiguing. You can''t listen to this headphone long before you get a headache and loose interest.
Pros:
-This headphone is very capable. An EQ can somewhat mitigate the harsh mids, but you can only do so much to change a driver''s characteristics.
-The trebel is awesome. It''s clear, crisp, and detialed.
-Can be driven from a mobile device, but benifits from an external dac like the audioquest dragonfly red.
Conclusion:
This headphone is very capable, strong, and crisp. However, the shortcomings make it too difficult for me to listen to. FYI my favorite sound signatures belong to the sennheiser ie80 and the sennheiser hd650... from what I have listened to of course.
DON’T TAKE MY REVIEW TO HEART. IT’S ALL SUBJECTIVE IN THE END.

These are AWESOME headphones!! I love ''em!!! I use them with my iPod daily while I travel and these are more than up to the task!. The highs are crisp, the mids are stellar and the bottoms are solid! No one aspect of the sound is overpowered or underpowered. I listen to a variety of music; several sub-genres of rock & electronic, some R & B and, of course, good old-fashion funk. They compliment everything I run through them. My actual rating is 4.5 out of 5 stars and there are 3 things that cost these cans that 1/2 star:

1) A detachable & thicker cable. Many of the reviews I read complained of the cable being to thin!! Admittedly, the cable is not as thin as I
anticipated, but it could be a bit thicker. The cable, also, could be detachable. I have headphones that have removable cords. Some lock in place
solidly and others it is a twist that locks the cable in place. Either way, a removable cable would be a great addition.

2) A click-wheel for the bass control. Unless headphones (regardless of the brand) are used with a powered home unit (like a stereo), they need an
extra boost. I use a portable amplifier to power my headphones. Even without an amplifier, one can still hear the BIG difference when adjusting
the bass adjuster. The issue I have with the adjuster is even when bumping it slightly, it will move. If one has it at a desired level, just touching it
will change the level. A click wheel would make the difference.

3) These headphones are suppose to be closed-back which would minimize the amount of external sound you would hear. These sound more like
open-back headphones which are great in a quieter environment, such as an empty room or a library, I use these during my commute and better
insulation would block out more external noise.

If the suggest issues were addressed, these simple adjustments would, in my opinion, give these headphones a 10 out of 5 star rating!!!! These issues aside, I would HIGHLY recommend the Sennheiser HD 630VB Headphones!! If you are going to spend the money, this is truly the way to go!!

These headphones are great. Especially at the price. I have a hard time really finding one audio device that I can stick with. Speakers bother my neighbors, earbuds make my ears feel weird after a lot of bass for a while, and HD650''s are great, but being open, they don''t like to push as much bass as I wish they did.

These headphones are the perfect middle ground for me. They don''t have the soundstage that the 650''s do, not even close. Nor are they meant to, being closed. But I prefer the closed design for 90% of my usage. I like to use them for music, movies, and gaming. I used to always say I wish they just made a closed HD650, I think I pretty much got my wish here.

Bass:

The biggest factor on these for bassheads is that they will give you an ear massage if you want them to. I''ve tested them hooked up to mobile, and it can get pretty bassy that way. But when I hook them up to my PC is when they really shine. There''s no amount of bass that I can throw at them that seems too much for them to handle. Pretty sure I''d mess my hearing up way before these things blew out. And that''s crazy at this price range. Just to be clear here, I''m talking so much bass that the headphones are physically moving on my head, with 0 loss of quality and no sign of them being stressed at all.
I don''t know why it can tend to be a frowned upon thing in the high-end audio community to seek out bass, but I love bass. Even aside from music, I like explosions to go boom boom. These go boom boom. If, like me, you''ve been trying to find a pair of headphones that can handle high-quality classical music, while also getting into the trenches with a cannon, these are for you.

Mids/highs:

Yes, I know there is more to music than the low end. I hear concerns about the high end, but I haven''t noticed any major problems. I will say that if it''s an extremely high note at high volume, for example, the top few keys of a piano at high volume, it is a bit harsh. But for 99% of usages I can''t imagine this being a problem. As I''ve said, I listen to a lot of piano and classical music, and I''ve not had any problems with them.
These are still really great all-around performers, even with the crazy bass. That''s what I love about them. These are not beats. They are fun and like to have a good time, but they know how to be serious when you want them to as well. Also as a bit of a side note here, I did an extensive demo on beats'' flagship offering. If you''re torn... get these. Not even close.

Build quality:

These things are just top notch all around, especially for the price. Mostly metal construction, really nice padding. The only possible complaint I have for these, and it''s kind of a big one, is the lack of removable cable. But I can look past it considering how much I love everything else about them.

Sound stage:

Again, these are not going to have the presence of something like the HD650. But for being closed, they sound good. I listen to classical on them and I enjoy it. I''ll admit that if I was going to sit down and purely listen to classical for a while, I''d opt for the 650''s. If that''s a deciding factor for you, take that into account.

Fun:

I can sit and talk about the technicalities of headphones all day, but the bottom line is that I just have so much fun with these headphones. I got rid of most of my headphones a couple of months ago as part of a big trade. I just decided to buy one pair for now that I''ll use a lot, and I didn''t give myself a real budget. I ended up picking these over the HD650''s, again having owned both in the past. I think that alone speaks for these. The 650''s are technically better on paper, but I just prefer these for most purposes, especially gaming.
I can''t imagine a situation where someone would regret owning these. I''ve showed them to a lot of people and I''ve never had anyone not be impressed. These are such a steal for their price.

WOW! REALLY! I don''t care if the cable is fixed...these are a great sounding pair of headphones. It''s taken me more than 30 mins to finish these few lines...keep hitting rewind because even though I''ve listened to my playlist more times than I can count I''m actually hearing it for the first time. Just about any genre you listen to just sounds better. I don''t consider myself an audiophile just someone who really enjoys listening to music: jazz, classic, rock, hip hop, rap, salsa, gospel, etc, etc, etc. I''m listening with an lg g7 and with it''s hifi quad dac on or off they sound amazing. Sennheiser you''re spoiling me!

Edit: added a fiio a5 and changed to lg g8...not an audiophile but double wow... it'' s making all my other headsets sound crappy...😞

Edit #2(04/17/20): changed set-up to LG V60...and the sounds these keep putting out is just stupidly excellent...someone else on this forum called them detail monsters(they really are)

I am amazed by the quality of the sound. I have owned a few different kinds of headphones, but these are by far the best. There are so many background pieces in songs that I have never heard that I can now hear with these Sennheisers. The quality is also really nice- all aluminum frame. It does have a non-detachable cable, but as long as you''re careful it shouldn''t be a problem. In addition, the clamping force is pretty strong coming out of the box, so I would personally advise carefully placing the headphones over something to stretch it out to avoid any earaches.

I love my Sennheiser 598s. They sound great. However, they are useless for a noisy environment as you will hear everything from the outside unless you listen to them very loud, and then those around you will be annoyed as the sound leaks (they are open). I''ve also spent some quality time with a pair of HD 700s. I also own a pair of PSB M4U 2s. When Sennheiser announced these, I know that I would have to get them. An HD class closed headphone was exactly what I was looking for. I''ve had them for a week now and here are my impressions: They do not sound as clear and the sound stage as not as pronounced as any of the above headphones mentioned. Even the closed PSBs. The best way to describe them is a little congested sounding. The headphones are not as comfortable as those of a traditional Sennheiser design, but still all day comfortable. The passive sound isolation is above average. These appear to be the best constructed headphones I''ve ever held that cost under $1k. (Audeze LCD line takes this one overall) The non-removable cable is a huge let down in a pair of headphones of this class and price. The Variable base is not a gimmick and is a genuinely useful feature. The cellphone controls work well on my Nexus 5 Android phone. The portable travel case is well made and should be a standard accessory for Sennheiser. Overall, I am happy with these, but they are not as good as I would have liked.
